Description
There is something so shaming about owning any of those--for Dummies books. The bright yellow cover screams from the bookshelf that the owner is a complete ignoramus about networking, knitting, red wine, Labrador Retrievers, or whatever. I do, in fact, own the last two titles, and I keep forgetting to take them with me on my next plane trip so I can leave them in the seat pocket with the SkyMall catalog, barf bag, and other frightening things that lurk there. When it comes to technology, I prefer to think of myself not as a dummy, but an "immigrant." Marc Prensky popularized the idea that those who have grown up with technology are "digital natives." They are native speakers of the language of computers, video games, and the Internet. (1) By contrast, those of us who were not born into a world with computers are "digital immigrants."
